September Update

I know it's been a while since I've updated the blog so it's about time I got to it!  We have had so much going on lately that I just haven't gotten the chance to stop and write it all down.

Over Labor Day weekend we went to Elliott's family's cottage in Tecumseh, ON.  It was the perfect way to relax and spend the weekend.

The basement is almost done!  We've finished painting in the main room and just have to finish the trim in the bathroom, the doors, and the banister for the stairs.  We are SO sick of painting!  It feels like we've been painting forever!  But really, when it's just two of you and there is so much to paint it does take a couple weeks.  Especially when you're traveling on weekend.  So here is what our basement is looking like right now.

The next step in the process is to get carpet.  When the contractor first told us we would have to buy carpet separately he said that Home Depot and Lowes compete so much that they've driven down the price so he can't make any money on it.  He estimated it would cost us $1,000 to carpet the entire basement. At around 550-600 sq ft, that comes out to be about a $1/sq ft carpet once you take into consideration that we would still have to pay for the pad and instillation.  When we went to Home Depot and Lowes for the carpet there was definitely nothing up to our standards in that price range.  After all the work that we put into the basement and all the money we sunk into it we just weren't willing to put in really bad carpet.  So we decided to throw that budget out of the window.  Elliott and I went to Home depot and picked out a couple samples that we liked.  They ended up being three times the price, but hey, we'll have great carpet!

These are the four samples we brought home to compare.

From those we narrowed them down to these two.  The one on the left is more expensive than the one on the right.  They both come in two different weights though, so we would be able to get the better quality version of the one on the right and still stay in the price range we want to.

We scheduled the measurement for Friday and after that we'll have to make our decision and schedule the actual instillation.

We also need to furnish this huge new space.  After a lot of talking we've decided to move our current living room furniture to the basement and buy new living room furniture.  This was good for a couple of reasons.  First off of course we wanted to get the newer and nicer furniture for the main living space in the house.  Second was that since our cat loves to sit in the front window sill she gets hair ALL OVER our couch.

Our current living room couches are a cross between fleece and micro-suede.  It's a really soft material, but it's not easy to clean.  So that cat hair just sticks to it! It's not pretty. And if you're allergic to cats (poor Dayna) sitting on our couches is not pleasant.   So we decided that since we have the opportunity to buy new furniture we should get leather which would be much easier to wipe the hair off of.  Elliott, my mom, and I went shopping and picked out this beauty.

You would think that we would have learned from the first time we went furniture shopping, but we were again surprised by how different our couch expectations are.  Elliott is all about the comfort.  He wants a couch to take a nap in.  I am more particular about how it is going to look, since I've never taken a nap in our couches.  We decided that this one was the best compromise.  Unfortunately the furniture store only had the love seat in stock.  So we have to wait for the sofa to come in on the boat from China.  So that'll be a couple months.  But we've made it this far without the basement so I think we can make it a couple more months.

There's been some other happenings her at The Jerv but I'll save them for later.  Check back next week!
